The beginning of the new 2021 in the province of Deraa was marked by an exacerbation of the situation in the area of
the city of Tafas, which is the center of an area located in the Syrian territory between the borders of Jordan and Israel.

The specificity of the situation is that the settlements of the district are under the control of self-defense detachments, consisting of reconciled militants.
Many of them recognize the authority of the former field commander of the Syrian opposition Khaldun Az-Zoubi, who for the money settled "tenants" in the houses left by the owners.
Some of the controversial dwellings in Tafas, as it turned out, were inhabited by former members of the bloody group Jaysh Khalid Ibn Al-Walid, who had sworn allegiance to ISIS * and cut the heads of opposition militants. They went over to the detachments of Az-Zoubi in time, but now they refused to leave illegally, in fact, occupied someone else's property without receiving monetary compensation.
It came to the point of clashes between two groups of Tafas militants. An unknown number of members of illegal armed groups and four civilians were killed, including two women.
It is worth noting that the Syrian special services consider the group of members of the Al-Zoubi clan, which came into conflict with Al-Qawan, to be involved in numerous attacks on their employees and military personnel of the Syrian Arab Army. The threat of reprisals against refugees trying to return their homes overwhelmed the patience of the leadership of the power structures of the SAR.

Special reconnaissance units "Mukhabarat" and the 4th Panzer Division of the SAR Armed Forces were pulled into the Tafas district.
By the evening of January 23, the military blocked Tafas itself, as well as the settlements of El Muzeirib, Jellin, El Yadudu. The command demanded by the morning of January 24 to extradite eight people suspected of involvement in terrorist activities and the murder of civilians.
In addition, the Syrian authorities insist on a procedure for a complete settlement of the status of former militants, the surrender of heavy weapons, and the restoration of state power in the region in the entire scope of sovereignty.
Those who did not want to stay in the Deraa province on such conditions, Damascus offered to leave for the territories occupied by Turkey, or for Idlib.

At 7:00 on January 24, tanks of the 4th division, located on the outskirts of Tafas, fired several blank shots over the roof of the building occupied by the headquarters of Khaldun Az-Zoubi's detachment. In response, one of the tanks was fired from an RPG, two soldiers were injured.
At 10:35 am, the group's headquarters was inflicted with fire from tank guns. After that, the militants suggested avoiding bloodshed and turning to the mediation of the Russian side.
In order to stabilize the situation, a convoy of Russian military police arrived in the area, as well as representatives of the Reconciliation Center.
After more than two hours of negotiations, the reconciled militants' command agreed to send eight suspects to the Idlib de-escalation zone, as well as to surrender their heavy weapons.
After that, the unblocking of Tafas and other settlements should take place, with the condition that the Syrian law enforcement agencies conduct targeted checks and resume negotiations on the full settlement of the status of the reconciled territories within the Syrian state.
